Warren B. Beckler, the son of Dr. Warren B. and Caroline Pollard Beckler, was born in Auburn, Maine on Feb. 17, 1895. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1917 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, a member of the first class to specialize in pulp and paper technology. He was a manager at International Paper Company in La Tuque, Quebec, for many years. He married Bernice M. Bailey in 1923. Beckler died on March 1, 1983. The University of Maine saw approximately 1,000 students and alumni serve in World War I and 3,900 serve in World War II. Both wars had a strong effect on the university and its students; the desire to honor those who had served and to memorialize those who had died led to various activities on campus.
